Since the beginning of backpacking in Europe, the nation of Belgium has been a firm contender on the shoestring traveller’s route, while, with the advent of Inter-rail passes no less than 40 years ago, it has also become one of the major stop overs on the way through to Germany, Eastern Europe and the Italian Med, from Paris and Spain in the west.

In the birthplace of the saxophone and in the company of towering greats, where the harmonica maestro Toots Thielemans and the gypsy guitar player Django Reinhardt once graced the shady bars, it’s perhaps not surprising that visitors to Belgium are treated to some of Europe’s best jazz bars.
