By air. Most flights to Belgium fly into Brussels National Airport (IATA Code: BRU) which is the main airport in the country. The airport serves as the hub for the national carrier, Brussels Airlines as well as services other airlines such as British Airways, British Midland, Ryanair, JetAirFly and Vueling. It is easier and more practical to book your flight through the Internet as you can compare prices and select the time way ahead in advance. Another airport is located south of Brussels and this is the Brussels South Charleroi Airport. It mostly services cheap flights from budget carriers such as Wizzair and Ryanair.
By land. If you are starting from a European country such as France, Germany or the United Kingdom, you can get to Belgium through any of the following modes of transportation: by car and motorcycle, by bus or by train.
If you are travelling by car you can take several major highways that pass through Belgium. These are the E-19 (from Netherlands), E-17 and E-19 (from France), E-40 and E-44(from Germany) and E-411 (from Luxembourg). Always make sure to carry your passport or national ID and your international driver’s license.
Riding by bus is by far the cheapest alternative to getting to Belgium, that is if you are already in Europe. Eurolines has coaches that make regular stops in Antwerpen, Luxembourg, Leuven, Liege and Brussels North.
Another practical and fast way to get to Belgium is to take the train and there is a number of train operators that ply the route to Brussels. Thalys has direct trains from Paris, Cologne and Amsterdam; Eurostar from London and south east of England; ICE from Frankfurt and Cologne. There are also trains coming from Zurich, Switzerland daily as well as from Lyon, Bordeaux and other cities in France.
By sea. There are ferry services between Belgium and the United Kingdom as well as from Scotland. These are overnight services and are usually not cheap. The ferry operators are P&O, Superfast Ferries and TransEuropa Ferries.
