Belgian Grand Prix

Being a famous automobile race – Belgian Grand Prix is the part of the Formula One World Championship. It was first held in 1925 not far from Liege in the town with a very relaxing name called Spa. It is known for its healing hot springs but is more famous however for hosting the annual Formula One Belgian Grand Prix. Since the first years of Belgian Grand Prix the town has been associated with racing.

Formula One or as it is officially referred to as FIA Formula One World Championship started its history in 1906. Its cars are claimed to be the fastest racing cars in the world with a speed of up to 360 km/h. During its history Formula One has changed greatly - it has become the most popular kind of racing attracting lots of viewers. Thanks to modern technologies millions of people have the opportunity to watch it via Internet. The official website of Formula One has a real time following of the events.  The major TV companies such as BBC also cover the events. Nowadays there are such apps available in iTunes Store that allow Apple users to check out the driver’s positions and the commentary.

The Circuit in Spa is considered to be the oldest one in Europe.  It is very much loved by drivers as they usually say that it has great opportunities for overtaking. The legend of the FIA Formula One World Championship – Michael Schumacher has his own history and memorable moments associated with the circuit. His debut was here in 1991, the next year he managed to win the Formula One race and in 2004 he won his seventh World Drivers' Championship title in Spa. He is undoubtedly considered one of the greatest drivers of Formula One. Michael and his brother Ralf are the only brothers in the history of F1 to win races. Holding many drivers records such as fastest laps and most races won in a single season Michael Schumacher is an ambassador of UNESCO. In the year 2010 his fortune was estimated at £515 million. For the 2011 Belgian Grand Prix, his 20th anniversary in F1, he was in his unique gold plated helmet.

Another thing for which the circuit in Spa is famous – is it’s unpredictable weather. The drivers never know what to expect, because it has always rained in one part of the track during the whole twenty-year history of the Belgian Grand Prix. Some parts of the road may be slippery and dangerous and that explains why the majority of participants consider the circuit to be the most challenging part of the Formula One.

More and more opportunities are becoming available for Formula One lovers. In spring 2012 a new channel dedicated to FIA Formula One World Championship will be launched. It will show all the races together with qualifying sessions and interviews without any commercials. BBC will also continue its coverage in different countries to satisfy all the fans across the globe.
